Quick answer

A 58mm tamper that fits loose is almost always sitting in a basket that is not a true 58mm, or the basket is wider at the top than at the base. Measure the basket's inside diameter at the rim; if it is not close to 58mm, change the basket rather than forcing a larger tamper.

Why a nominal 58mm basket can still feel loose

Basket makers label by nominal size, and the actual inside diameter at the rim can vary by a millimetre or more between brands. A tamper sized exactly to 58.0mm will rattle in a basket that measures 58.5mm at the top, even though both are sold as 58mm.

Baskets also taper. The rim may measure close to 58mm while the wall lower down narrows, so a tamper that drops in freely at the top can bind halfway. That is a basket geometry issue, not a tamper defect.

When the tamper itself is the problem

If your basket measures close to 58mm and a second 58mm tamper seats snugly while yours wobbles, the base is likely undersized or out of round. A caliper reading across the base will confirm it.

A base that is visibly scratched on one side only, or that rocks rather than sits flat, points to a damaged or poorly machined edge. No amount of technique will correct that.

The trade-off: snug versus free-moving

A tamper that fits with almost zero clearance gives the most even puck, but it also traps grounds around the rim and can suction onto the basket. A little clearance makes the tamper easier to lift and clean.

Do not chase a perfectly airtight fit. If the tamper drops in and out without binding and the puck looks level, the fit is doing its job.

Diagnose a loose tamper in four checks

  • Symptom: tamper rocks side to side at the rim: Measure the basket's inside diameter across the top with a caliper. If it reads more than about 0.3mm over 58mm, the basket is the cause, not the tamper. Record the measurement before buying anything.
  • Symptom: tamper drops in but binds lower down: Shine a light into the basket. A visible taper or a stepped wall means the basket narrows below the rim, so a larger tamper will not help.
  • Symptom: tamper fits a second basket but not the first: Compare both baskets with the same caliper. If the first basket is wider, replace the basket or accept a looser fit rather than buying a bigger tamper. One tamper cannot fit two mismatched baskets well.
  • When to stop or choose another option: If the basket measures close to 58mm and the tamper base measures under 57.8mm or is out of round, stop adjusting your technique and replace the tamper. If both measure correctly and the fit is still loose, the basket is worn or out of specification and should be replaced. Replace the part that measures wrong, not the one that feels wrong.

Product facts

  • Coffee Accessories Tamper 58mm: 58mm stainless steel base with an aluminium handle and rubber grip, available in Black, Silver, Red and White. A stainless base holds its shape better than soft metal, so if this tamper still wobbles, the basket is the more likely culprit.
