Quick Answer

If you want a more capable, full-featured portable controller with modern thumbsticks, choose ATOM+ Smoke Black. If you prioritize keychain portability and retro style, the ATOM Retro Purple is the lighter, more collectible option.

Size and Portability Trade-Off

The most obvious difference is size. ATOM is a keychain controller, small enough to clip onto a bag or key ring. ATOM+ is described as palm-sized, which is still ultra-compact but not keychain-sized. This means ATOM+ likely fits better in a pocket or small case, while ATOM is easier to carry without any extra bulk.

If you want a controller that is always with you, the keychain design of ATOM is hard to beat. But if you're okay with a slightly larger device that still slips into a pocket, ATOM+ offers a more substantial grip and extra controls.

Controls and Stick Technology

ATOM+ features zero stick drift TMR thumbsticks and a full control layout including dual sticks, triggers, and shoulder buttons. This makes it suitable for games that require precise analog input and more buttons. The ATOM Retro Purple, while offering a complete control scheme for its size, does not list TMR sticks or the same full layout.

For modern 3D games or anything that relies on analog sticks, ATOM+ is the better choice. For retro-style games or simple platformers, the ATOM's controls may be sufficient.

ATOM+ vs ATOM: Which Should You Choose?

  • ATOM+ Smoke Black: Choose ATOM+ if you want a palm-sized controller with TMR thumbsticks, dual sticks, triggers, and shoulder buttons. It offers a more complete control layout for a wider range of games. Ideal for gamers who need precise analog sticks and extra buttons in a portable size.
  • ATOM Retro Purple: Choose ATOM if you want a keychain-sized controller that clips onto your keys or bag. It's a retro-modern collectible that's always within reach. Best for casual gaming and collectors who value ultimate portability over advanced controls.
  • Compatibility: Both controllers work with Nintendo Switch, PC/Mac, mobile, tablet, and Smart TV. Consider which platforms you play most and whether the control layout meets your needs. Check your primary gaming platform and game types to decide which controller fits.
