Quick answer
Both Attack on Titan playmats are made of soft neoprene and come in sturdy cardboard boxes, so their day-to-day durability is similar. The main difference is the artwork—Origins of Power features character panels from the manga, while Apocalypse showcases a bold "Usurper" design.
Myth: One playmat is significantly more durable than the other
Some players think that because the Apocalypse playmat has a different name and price, it might be built tougher. In reality, both are constructed from soft neoprene and packed in the same type of sturdy cardboard box. The catalog facts confirm identical material and packaging, so durability differences are negligible.
What affects playmat wear over time
The biggest factors for playmat longevity are how you store and clean it, not the specific print run. Both mats benefit from being kept flat in their box when not in use and wiped down with a damp cloth. Avoid folding or rolling tightly to prevent creases in the neoprene.
Verdicts on common durability claims
- Claim: The Apocalypse playmat is more durable because it costs more: Verdict: False. Both mats use the same soft neoprene material and similar cardboard packaging. The price difference is likely due to artwork licensing, not construction quality.
- Claim: Cardboard boxes are weaker than tubes for playmat storage: Verdict: Not necessarily. A sturdy cardboard box provides flat storage, which prevents curling and creases that can happen with tubes. Both playmats come in boxes. Store your playmat flat in its box for best longevity.
- Claim: Neoprene playmats wear out quickly if used daily: Verdict: Partially true. Neoprene can show surface wear over time, but proper care—like cleaning with a damp cloth and avoiding sharp objects—extends its life significantly. Wipe the mat after each session and keep it in the box when not in use.
