Quick answer
Use the BetaLock™ as a combination carabiner and lock to secure zippers, attach your bag to a fixed object, or deter opportunistic theft while traveling.
Why a lockable carabiner works better than a padlock
A standard padlock secures one zipper pull but leaves the other exposed. The BetaLock™ clips both pulls together and locks the gate, so a would-be thief cannot slide the zippers apart. The aircraft-grade aluminum body keeps weight low — under 30 grams — so you won't notice it on your backpack until you need it.
The key-operated deadbolt is a trade-off: you cannot reset the combination if you forget a code, but there is no battery to die and no digital keypad to fail. Carry the spare key separately.
When to lock and when to just clip
Use the lock function in hostels, trains, or crowded markets where your bag stays unattended for minutes. Use it as a plain carabiner on day hikes or when you need quick access — the gate stays closed but does not require the key to open.
The BetaLock™ is not a replacement for a TSA-approved lock. If you fly with checked luggage, keep your main bag lock TSA-compliant and use the BetaLock™ on a personal item or daypack.
How to use the BetaLock™ in three steps
- Lock zipper pulls together: Gather both zipper pulls on your backpack or bag so they sit side by side. Open the BetaLock™ gate, slide the pulls onto the carabiner body, then close and lock the gate with the key. Turn the key a quarter turn to engage the deadbolt. Common mistake: leaving the gate unlocked. Always turn the key to the locked position, even if you are in a hurry.
- Secure the bag to a fixed object: Loop the BetaLock™ around a chair leg, luggage rack, or bike frame. Clip the gate shut and lock it. The bag cannot be lifted away without cutting the strap or the lock. Checkpoint: make sure the object is truly fixed — a lightweight chair can be carried away with the bag still attached.
- Use as a standard carabiner without locking: Open the gate and clip keys, a water bottle, or a small pouch to your pack. Close the gate without turning the key. The spring-loaded gate stays shut during normal movement but can be opened by hand. Empty.
