Quick answer
The Youtooz Bored Squidward plush is not a frame-by-frame replica of the cartoon. It captures a specific meme pose with stylized proportions, and some details like the book title and boat color are artistic choices, not errors.
Licensing restrictions affect design
Due to licensing restrictions, the SpongeBob Collection only ships to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. This means the plush was designed under a specific license that may not allow exact reproduction of every show element. The plush is an authorized interpretation, not a screen-accurate prop.
Pose and expression are meme-inspired
The plush shows Squidward sitting in a red and white boat with his head resting in his right hand. This pose is directly from the 'Bored Squidward' meme, which exaggerates his usual deadpan expression. In the show, Squidward rarely holds that exact posture for long, so the plush freezes a specific internet moment rather than a typical cartoon frame.
Small prop details differ intentionally
In his left hand, the plush holds a red book with the title 'Dance Now!' in blue on the cover. This book does not appear in the original show; it is a playful addition by Youtooz. Similarly, the boat color (red and white) matches the meme art more closely than the show's purple and teal boat. These are deliberate creative choices to make the collectible stand out.
Verdicts on common claims
- Claim: The plush is inaccurate because the boat is red and white: Verdict: True, but intentional. The show's boat is purple and teal, while the meme version often uses red and white. Youtooz chose the meme palette to match the 'Bored Squidward' internet icon.
- Claim: The book 'Dance Now!' doesn't exist in the show: Verdict: True. The book is an original prop added by Youtooz for humor. It is not a mistake; it is a creative liberty.
- Claim: The plush should look exactly like the cartoon: Verdict: False. Licensed collectibles often have stylized proportions and added details. The plush is a fan-inspired piece, not a screen-accurate replica. If you want a show-exact Squidward, this plush is not for you. If you love the meme and a unique collectible, it is a great choice.
