Quick Answer
Yes, a custom fantasy football mat can work for Blood Bowl, but you need to check the pitch markings and size. If the mat uses a standard football layout, it may not match Blood Bowl's grid, so measure your play area first.
Pitch Markings Matter More Than the Theme
Blood Bowl uses a specific grid of squares for movement and passing. A custom fantasy football mat with a real-world football pitch design will not have those squares, which can make gameplay awkward. If you're okay with using a separate overlay or measuring your own grid, the mat still works as a thematic surface.
The custom fantasy football play mat from Mats by Mars lets you choose the pitch design, so you can pick a layout that feels closer to what you need. Just remember that the design is for Fantasy Football, not Blood Bowl, so the markings won't match the official game.
Size and Surface Trade-Offs
Blood Bowl pitches are typically 22 by 15 squares, which is smaller than a full football pitch. A custom football mat may be larger than your table, so check the dimensions before you buy. The mats are printed on durable fabric, which gives a good rolling surface for dice and miniatures, but the larger size might require extra table space.
The Verdant Field Fantasy Football Play Mat offers a green field design that looks great for Blood Bowl's fantasy setting. It's a more affordable option if you want a themed surface without paying for full customization.
Verdicts on Using a Custom Football Mat for Blood Bowl
- Can you use a custom football mat for Blood Bowl?: Yes, but only if you accept that the pitch markings won't match Blood Bowl's grid. You can still play with a separate square overlay or by measuring your own grid. Check the mat's dimensions against your table before buying.
- Will the surface work for miniatures and dice?: Yes. The mats are made of durable printed fabric that provides a stable, non-slip surface for rolling dice and moving miniatures.
- Which mat should you choose?: If you want a fully customizable design, choose the Custom Fantasy Football Play Mat. For a budget-friendly themed option, the Verdant Field mat works well. Decide whether you need customization or just a themed surface.
