Quick answer
Chicken Soup for the Soul Large Breed Dog Food is a solid choice for adult large breed dogs who need a high-protein, grain-free diet without by-products, corn, wheat, or soy. The 28 lb bag offers good value at $38.27.
Why ingredient quality matters for large breed dogs
Large breed dogs have unique nutritional needs, especially for joint health and weight management. A diet with real meat as the first ingredient supports lean muscle mass, while avoiding fillers like corn and wheat helps maintain a healthy weight.
Chicken Soup for the Soul uses real chicken as the #1 ingredient and real turkey as #2, with no by-product meals. This means your dog gets high-quality protein without unnecessary additives.
What to look for in a large breed dry food
Look for a formula that lists a named meat source first, avoids artificial colors and preservatives, and does not rely on corn, wheat, or soy as cheap fillers. Large breed dogs also benefit from controlled calcium and phosphorus levels, though this specific formula does not publish those numbers on the bag.
If your dog has known sensitivities, the absence of corn, wheat, and soy in this food reduces common triggers. However, if your vet has recommended a specific calcium ratio, you may need to consult the manufacturer for more detail.
Decision rules for choosing this food
- Check the first two ingredients: The first two ingredients should be named meat sources. This formula lists real chicken and real turkey, ensuring protein quality.
- Avoid common allergens: If your dog has food sensitivities, choose a formula without corn, wheat, or soy. This food contains none of those. Always introduce new food gradually over 7-10 days to monitor for reactions.
- Consider your dog's life stage: This formula is designed for adult large breed dogs. Puppies and seniors may need different calcium or protein levels. Check with your vet if your dog is not a healthy adult.
- Evaluate the price per pound: At $38.27 for a 28 lb bag (catalog comparison $57.99), this food offers competitive pricing for a premium ingredient list. Order online for local delivery or curb-side pickup in St. Joseph MO. Compare to other large breed formulas to confirm it fits your budget.
