Quick answer

Choose Zaxxon for its iconic isometric shooting and unique altitude mechanic, or pick Time Pilot for free-roaming dogfights across different eras. Both are excellent used Colecovision titles backed by a 90-day return policy.

What sets these space shooters apart

Zaxxon and Time Pilot represent two distinct approaches to the space shooter genre on Colecovision. Zaxxon is famous for its isometric perspective—you fly a ship through a fortress, adjusting altitude to dodge walls and ground fire while shooting enemies. It demands constant vertical awareness, making each run a test of precision.

Time Pilot, by contrast, drops you into open skies where you can move freely in any direction. You fight waves of enemy aircraft that escalate from World War I biplanes to modern jets and UFOs. The time-travel theme gives it a variety that keeps each level feeling fresh.

Price and value considerations

Both games are priced competitively as used NTSC cartridges. Zaxxon is listed at USD 38.34 (down from a comparison price of USD 54.00), while Time Pilot is USD 39.60 (originally USD 66.00). The slight price difference reflects their rarity and demand, but both offer solid retro value.

Each cartridge is guaranteed to work and backed by a 90-day no-questions-asked returns policy, so you can buy with confidence regardless of your choice.

Trade-offs at a glance

  • Zaxxon: Isometric precision: You must manage altitude while shooting. The learning curve is steeper, but mastering the fortress layout is deeply satisfying.
  • Time Pilot: Open freedom: You can fly in any direction and fight enemies from five historical eras. Easier to pick up, with more visual variety.
  • Price difference: Zaxxon costs about USD 1.26 less than Time Pilot at current catalog prices. Both are affordable, but the gap may matter if you're on a strict budget. Check current stock; used cartridges can sell out quickly.
