Quick Answer
If you need a ready-to-play deck, the Critical Role Challenger Series: The Mighty Nein is the clear choice; if you want to protect your cards and add style to your table, the Critical Role Playmat: Best Detectives is the better pick.
What Each Product Adds to Your Game
The Challenger Series deck is a complete 60-card preconstructed deck that lets you start playing Universus immediately. It includes four fan-favorite characters from Critical Role, giving you variety in one purchase.
The playmat, on the other hand, is a tabletop accessory that defines your play area. It features Jester and Nott as a detective duo, adding personality to your setup while protecting your cards from the table surface.
Your choice depends on whether you need gameplay content or tabletop presentation. The deck changes how you play; the playmat changes where you play.
The Trade-Off: Gameplay vs. Accessory
The deck is a functional necessity for anyone who wants to play Universus without building a deck from scratch. It offers immediate value and is a great starting point for new players.
The playmat is an enhancement, not a requirement. It won't affect your game rules, but it can improve comfort and protect your cards during long sessions.
If you already have decks, the playmat adds more to your experience. If you're new, the deck is the priority.
Decision Guide: Playmat or Deck?
- If you're new to Universus: Choose the Challenger Series deck. It gives you a complete, playable deck with multiple character options, so you can learn the game without needing to build a deck first. Start with the deck to get into the game quickly.
- If you already have decks: Choose the playmat. It enhances your existing play sessions by providing a themed, protective surface for your cards, making game nights more comfortable and stylish. Add the playmat to upgrade your tabletop experience.
- If you want both: Consider purchasing both. The deck gives you new gameplay options, and the playmat ensures your cards stay in good condition during play. Together, they cover both needs. Buying both gives you the complete experience.
