Quick answer
Place ExperTemp temporary crown and bridge material in four clear steps to achieve strong, esthetic provisional restorations with easy handling and excellent polishability.
Why choose a bis-acryl composite for temporaries
Bis-acryl composites like ExperTemp offer higher flexural strength and better marginal integrity than traditional methyl methacrylate materials. They also produce less heat during setting and have a more pleasant odor.
The trade-off is that bis-acryl composites require careful isolation and a dedicated primer for reliable adhesion to prepared tooth structure. Skipping moisture control can lead to premature failure.
Step-by-step placement guide
- Prepare the tooth and select the matrix: Isolate the prepared tooth with a rubber dam or cotton rolls and retraction cord. Choose a preformed crown form or a vacuum-formed matrix from the diagnostic wax-up. Ensure the matrix fits passively without binding on adjacent teeth. If the matrix is too tight, trim the gingival margin or use a slightly larger size to avoid trapping excess material under the gingiva.
- Mix and load the ExperTemp material: Dispense equal lengths of base and catalyst onto a mixing pad. Mix for 20-30 seconds until a uniform color is achieved. Load the matrix from the occlusal aspect, slightly overfilling the most retentive areas. Avoid trapping air bubbles by pressing the material into the matrix with a spatula. A common mistake is underfilling the matrix, which leads to voids at the margin. Overfill slightly and trim excess after setting.
- Seat and hold the matrix: Place the loaded matrix onto the prepared tooth and seat it with gentle finger pressure. Hold steadily for 3-4 minutes (or follow the manufacturer's working time for the specific shade). During setting, wipe away excess material that flows onto adjacent teeth using a microbrush. Do not release pressure early; premature removal can distort the temporary or create open margins. Use a timer to ensure consistent setting.
- Remove, trim, and polish: After the material has set, gently remove the matrix. Use a sharp explorer to lift the temporary from the tooth. Trim excess with a carbide bur or diamond finishing bur at low speed. Polish the temporary using silicone polishers or a pumice slurry to achieve a smooth, esthetic surface. Check marginal fit with an explorer. If the margin is open or overextended, adjust with a finishing bur and re-polish. Do not cement a temporary with a defective margin.
