Quick answer
Yes, the Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook is worth it if you value a premium collectible package and want both Blu-ray and DVD copies of this essential Studio Ghibli film.
What makes this steelbook special
The steelbook packaging itself is the main draw. It offers a durable, artful case that stands out on a shelf compared to a standard plastic keep case. For collectors, this is often reason enough.
The set includes both a Blu-ray and a DVD, giving you flexibility in playback. The Blu-ray provides the best video and audio quality, while the DVD ensures compatibility with older players or drives.
Price and value trade-offs
At a catalog price of $16.19 (compared to $26.98), this steelbook is a significant discount from its original retail. However, if you already own the standard Blu-ray or DVD, the upgrade is purely for the packaging and the convenience of having both discs in one place.
The film itself is a powerful, heartbreaking story, but it lacks the fantasy elements of other Ghibli titles. Some viewers may find it too emotionally heavy to rewatch frequently, which could affect the perceived value of a collector's edition.
Decision rules: Should you buy the Grave of the Fireflies Steelbook?
- You want a collectible steelbook case: If you display your Blu-rays and appreciate unique packaging, the steelbook is a clear upgrade over the standard edition.
- You need both Blu-ray and DVD: Having both discs in one set is convenient for sharing with family or playing in different rooms without format issues.
- You already own the standard Blu-ray: Unless you specifically want the steelbook case, the film content is identical. The extra cost may not justify the upgrade. Consider if the packaging alone is worth the price.
- You are new to the film: This steelbook is an excellent entry point at a discounted price, offering the best available quality in a premium package.
