Quick Answer
Clean your fumed glass chillum with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, but remove the battery cap first to protect the LED. Avoid soaking the LED area to prevent damage.
Why Fumed Glass Needs Special Care
Fumed glass gets its iridescent colors from vaporized metals fused into the surface during production. The LED in models like the Jeremi LED Fumed Chillum adds an extra layer that can be damaged by harsh chemicals or prolonged soaking. Standard glass cleaning methods work, but you must protect the electronic components.
What You'll Need
Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher), coarse salt (like kosher or rock salt), a small container or resealable bag, pipe cleaners or a soft brush, and a dry cloth. Avoid acetone or abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the fumed finish.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
- Remove the Battery Cap: Unscrew the battery cap from the bottom of the chillum and set it aside. This disconnects the LED and prevents moisture from reaching the electronics. Forgetting to remove the cap is the most common cause of LED failure after cleaning.
- Shake with Alcohol and Salt: Place the chillum (without the cap) in a small container or bag. Add enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the bowl and stem, then add a tablespoon of coarse salt. Seal and shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds. The salt acts as an abrasive to loosen resin without scratching the fumed glass. Do not shake so hard that the chillum hits the container walls—wrap it in a cloth if needed to avoid chips.
- Rinse and Dry Thoroughly: Remove the chillum and rinse it with warm water until all alcohol and salt residue are gone. Shake out excess water and let it air dry completely—at least 30 minutes—before reattaching the battery cap. Any moisture left inside can short the LED. If you see fog inside the glass, it means water trapped the LED compartment. Let it dry longer or use a gentle stream of compressed air.
- Reattach the Battery Cap: Once the chillum is completely dry, screw the battery cap back in. Test the LED by turning it on. If it doesn't light, the battery may need replacing or the contacts need a dry wipe. If the LED still doesn't work after drying, the battery might be dead—replace it with a standard coin cell (check the product manual for the exact type).
