Quick answer
Disassemble the Café Cap daily, hand-wash with mild soap and warm water, then air-dry completely before reassembly. A weekly deep soak in a vinegar solution removes stubborn coffee stains and odors.
Why regular cleaning matters for the Café Cap
The Café Cap’s swivel loop and internal thread design create small crevices where coffee residue and bacteria can build up. If you only rinse the cap, oils from coffee or tea will cling to the silicone gasket and plastic components, leading to stale smells and a sticky mouthfeel. A quick daily wash prevents that buildup and keeps the cap tasting neutral.
The leak-proof seal depends on the silicone gasket staying clean and properly seated. Food particles or mineral deposits can prevent the gasket from forming a tight seal, which defeats the purpose of a travel-ready cap. A clean cap is a reliable cap.
Step-by-step cleaning routine
- Disassemble the cap completely: Twist the Café Cap off the bottle. Separate the swivel loop from the cap body — it pivots freely and lifts off. Remove the silicone gasket from inside the cap. You now have three parts: cap body, loop, and gasket. Skipping disassembly leaves trapped residue in the gasket channel. Always separate all three pieces.
- Hand-wash each part with mild soap: Use a soft sponge or bottle brush with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Scrub the cap body interior threads, the underside of the swivel loop, and both sides of the silicone gasket. Rinse thoroughly under running water until no suds remain. The gasket is the most common source of odors. Give it extra attention. Avoid abrasive scrubbers — they can scratch the plastic and create rough spots that trap bacteria.
- Deep-clean for coffee stains (weekly or as needed): Fill a small bowl with equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Submerge the disassembled cap parts for 15–20 minutes. The mild acid dissolves coffee oils and mineral deposits. Rinse with fresh water afterward. Baking soda paste works for stubborn stains, but vinegar is gentler on the silicone. Never boil or dishwasher the Café Cap — heat can warp the plastic and ruin the seal.
- Air-dry fully before reassembly: Place all three parts on a clean dish towel or drying rack, separated so air reaches every surface. Allow at least 2–3 hours of air-drying. Do not use a towel to dry the inside of the cap body — lint can stick to the silicone. Reassembling while damp encourages mold growth in the gasket channel. Patience here prevents musty smells.
- Reassemble and check the seal: Press the silicone gasket back into its groove until it sits flat and even. Snap the swivel loop onto the cap body. Twist the cap onto the bottle, fill with water, and invert to test for leaks. A slight wiggle of the loop should not cause drips. If you feel resistance when twisting, the gasket may be misaligned. Remove and reseat it. A proper seal is silent — no hissing or dripping.
