Quick Answer

To install the Deadbolt Adapter Kit, you'll need to remove your existing deadbolt and attach the appropriate adapter from the kit to ensure it works with your Yale Approach or August Smart Lock.

Why You Might Need the Adapter Kit

The Deadbolt Adapter Kit is designed to make your existing cylinder deadbolt compatible with Yale Approach Lock with Wi-Fi, August Smart Lock (3rd Gen non-Pro), and August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen). Without it, the smart lock may not fit correctly, leading to alignment issues or improper function.

A common mistake is assuming your deadbolt is universally compatible. This kit solves that by providing adapters that fit most standard cylinder deadbolts, saving you from having to replace the entire deadbolt.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove the Existing Deadbolt: Unscrew the two screws on the interior side of your door to remove the deadbolt assembly. Keep the screws for later use. Check that your deadbolt is a standard cylinder type; non-standard deadbolts may not be compatible.
  2. Select the Correct Adapter: From the kit, choose the adapter that matches the shape and size of your deadbolt's tailpiece. The kit includes multiple adapters for different deadbolt designs. If the adapter doesn't fit snugly, try another one from the kit; forcing it could damage the lock.
  3. Attach the Adapter to the Deadbolt: Slide the chosen adapter onto the tailpiece of your deadbolt. Ensure it is fully seated and aligned with the deadbolt's rotation. The adapter should rotate freely with the deadbolt; if it binds, recheck alignment.
  4. Reinstall the Deadbolt Assembly: Place the deadbolt back into the door and secure it with the screws you removed earlier. Tighten them evenly. Over-tightening can warp the deadbolt or cause the smart lock to misalign.
  5. Install the Smart Lock: Follow your smart lock's installation guide to attach it to the deadbolt. The adapter should now allow the smart lock to engage the deadbolt correctly. Test the lock manually before closing the door to ensure smooth operation.
