Quick Answer
Install RetroSound speaker grilles and RetroPod surface mount pods in your classic car by surface-mounting the pods, running speaker wire, and securing grilles with the included mounting rings—no cutting or drilling needed.
Why Surface Mounting Works for Classic Cars
RetroPod surface mount pods attach to any flat surface, so you can add modern speakers to a classic car without modifying the original interior. This is a big advantage if you want to keep the factory look or avoid irreversible changes.
The tradeoff is that surface-mounted pods are visible. You can paint or wrap them to match your interior, but they will still protrude slightly. Plan placement carefully so they do not interfere with your legs or entry/exit.
Choosing the Right Grille Size
Grilles must match your speaker diameter. RetroSound offers 6.5-inch and 5.25-inch grilles, each sold as a single. Measure your speaker's outer diameter before ordering to avoid a mismatch.
If you are replacing a worn grille, the included mounting ring makes it easy to swap without removing the speaker from the pod or panel.
Step-by-Step Installation Process
- Plan placement: Choose a flat surface for each pod, such as a kick panel or under-dash area. Ensure the pod does not obstruct pedals or your legs. Check clearance before drilling any pilot holes.
- Mount the pod: Use the pod's mounting holes as a template to mark pilot holes. Drill small pilot holes, then secure the pod with screws (not included). Avoid overtightening to prevent cracking. Use a test fit with the pod in place before final tightening.
- Run speaker wire: Route speaker wire from your stereo to each pod. Keep wire away from moving parts and sharp edges. Use grommets where passing through metal. Leave a little slack at the pod to allow for adjustments.
- Connect the speaker: Connect the speaker to the wire, observing polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative). Seat the speaker in the pod and secure it with the provided screws. Double-check polarity before finalizing the connection.
- Install the grille: Place the grille over the speaker and snap or screw the mounting ring into place. Ensure the grille is centered and secure. Test the grille for rattles by playing music at moderate volume.
