Quick answer
Apply monthly planner tabs to the edge of your monthly spread pages so you can flip directly to the current month without thumbing through every page.
Why tabs beat bookmarks and sticky notes
Bookmarks slip out and sticky notes lose their grip over time. A dedicated tab stuck to the page edge stays put and gives you a visual anchor every time you open your planner. Monthly tabs work especially well for undated planners where you set your own months.
Gold foil tabs vs plain paper tabs
Gold foil tabs add a subtle metallic sheen that catches light, making them easier to spot at a glance. The foil is also more resistant to scuffing than printed ink, so the tab stays readable even after months of daily use. Plain paper tabs work fine but can wear down faster and are harder to see in low light.
How to apply monthly planner tabs
- Choose your tab color and month order: Select a set of monthly tabs in a color that contrasts with your planner pages. If your tabs come on a single sheet, decide whether you want to place them in calendar order (January–December) or in the order of your actual planner months. Peel the first tab from the backing sheet. A common mistake is peeling all tabs at once. Peel and apply one tab at a time to keep the backing intact and avoid dust sticking to the adhesive.
- Position the tab on the page edge: Flip to the first monthly spread you want to mark. Align the tab so that about 1/8 inch of the tab extends past the paper edge. Press firmly from the center outward to remove air bubbles. Repeat for each month, staggering the tabs slightly down the page so they don't overlap. If you place tabs too far inward, they won't stick out enough to be visible. Keep the exposed edge consistent across all tabs.
- Smooth and set the adhesive: After placing all tabs, run your fingernail or a bone folder over each one to ensure full contact. Close the planner and press down gently on the cover to set the tabs in place. Wait a few minutes before flipping through to let the adhesive bond. Skipping the smoothing step can cause the tab edges to curl up over time, especially in bags or backpacks.
