Quick Answer

Clean the damaged area, cut a patch to size, apply the adhesive tape from the inside, and press firmly for a strong bond.

Why Patch from the Inside

Patching from the interior of your backpack or tent applies pressure that helps the adhesive tape conform to the fabric's shape. This method also protects the patch from further abrasion on the outside.

When to Replace vs. Patch

Minor abrasions, slices, and punctures are ideal for patching. If the tear is larger than a few inches or compromises a seam, consider professional repair or replacement.

Steps to Patch a Tear

  1. Clean and Dry the Area: Remove dirt and moisture from around the tear. Use a clean cloth or your shirt if needed. Let it air dry completely. A dirty or wet surface will prevent the tape from sticking—reapply only after the area is clean and dry.
  2. Cut the Patch to Size: From the repair kit, cut a piece of adhesive tape that extends at least 1 inch beyond the tear on all sides. Round the corners to prevent peeling. Sharp corners are more likely to lift over time. Rounding them improves durability.
  3. Apply from the Inside: Peel the backing off the tape and place it over the tear on the inside of the fabric. Press firmly from the center outward to remove air bubbles. If you apply from the outside, the patch may snag or peel. Always patch from the interior.
  4. Press and Hold for 30 Seconds: Use your fingers or a smooth object to apply steady pressure over the entire patch. Hold for at least 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond. Skipping this step can result in a weak bond that fails under load. Take the time to press firmly.
  5. Let It Cure: Wait at least 1 hour before using the gear. For best results, wait 24 hours before exposing the patch to heavy loads or moisture. The adhesive reaches full strength after curing. If you need an emergency fix, the patch will hold temporarily but may not last as long.
