Quick answer
To play Apropos of Board Games - Table Talk solo, use the included solo rules that challenge you to name board games matching an ever-growing list of restrictions within a time limit.
What makes the solo mode different
The solo mode removes the cooperative element and turns the game into a timed personal challenge. Instead of working with others to find a title that fits all restrictions, you race against a timer to see how many restrictions you can satisfy with a single game title.
Because the game is designed for 2+ players, the solo variant requires you to be both the thinker and the judge. You must honestly evaluate your own answers without external confirmation.
How to set up and play solo
- 1. Prepare the deck: Shuffle the restriction cards and place the deck face down. Set a timer for 3 minutes. You will also need a way to track your score (pen and paper or a scoring app). Make sure you have a timer ready before you start; the solo mode is time-sensitive.
- 2. Draw the first restriction: Draw the top card from the deck and read it aloud. The card will list one or more restrictions for a board game title you must think of. For example, it might ask for a game with a color in its name or a game published before 2000. Read the restriction carefully—some cards have multiple conditions that all must be met by a single game title.
- 3. Name a game that fits: Within the time limit, think of a board game title that satisfies every restriction on the card. Say the title out loud. If you cannot think of one within 30 seconds, you may discard that card and draw a new one, but you lose a point. A common mistake is forgetting that all restrictions must apply to the same game. Double-check your answer against each condition.
- 4. Score your answer: After naming a game, you earn 1 point if the title genuinely meets all restrictions. If you are unsure, you may look up the game (if playing solo, honesty is key). Discard the used card and draw the next one. Continue until the 3-minute timer runs out. Honesty is essential in solo play—there is no one to verify your answers, so the challenge is only as meaningful as your integrity.
- 5. End the game and tally score: When the timer ends, stop drawing cards. Count the number of cards you successfully answered (each is 1 point). Subtract 1 point for each card you discarded without answering. Your final score is the total. Compare against the solo score chart: 5+ points is expert level. If you scored fewer than 3 points, try a longer timer (5 minutes) or combine with the original Apropos of Board Games deck for more variety.
