Quick answer
Use AK Gen-3 Grimy Grey 17ml as a wash or direct brush-on for adding realistic grime to panel lines, crevices, and recessed areas on scale models.
Why Grimy Grey works for weathering
AK Gen-3 Grimy Grey is a pre-thinned acrylic designed for model weathering. Its grey tone mimics accumulated dirt and dust, making it ideal for military vehicles, sci-fi kits, and dioramas. The 17ml bottle provides enough paint for several projects without waste.
Choosing the right application method
For fine details like panel lines, apply as a wash: thin with water or AK thinner and let capillary action pull it into recesses. For broader areas, brush on directly and wipe excess with a damp cloth. Avoid airbrushing unless you reduce heavily, as the pigment is dense.
Step-by-step weathering with Grimy Grey
- Prepare the surface: Ensure the model is clean and dry. A gloss coat before weathering helps the paint flow into recesses without staining flat surfaces. Skipping a protective coat can make cleanup difficult.
- Apply the wash: Mix AK Gen-3 Grimy Grey with water or AK thinner at 1:3 ratio. Brush into panel lines and crevices. Let capillary action spread it evenly. Too thick a mix will leave blobs instead of a thin stain.
- Wipe away excess: After 30-60 seconds, use a damp cloth or cotton swab to remove paint from raised surfaces. Leave it in recesses for the grime effect. Waiting too long makes the paint hard to remove; work in small sections.
- Seal the finish: Once dry (30 minutes), apply a matte or satin varnish to protect the weathering. This also unifies the sheen across the model. A gloss varnish can wash out the grimy look; matte is usually better.
