Quick answer
Use the Miffy Swaddle Up Starter Bundle to swaddle your newborn with their arms in the patented ARMS UP™ position, ensuring a snug fit around the chest and hips while leaving room for hip movement.
Why the ARMS UP™ position supports safe sleep
The Miffy Swaddle Up Starter Bundle features the patented ARMS UP™ shape, which allows your baby to self-soothe by bringing their hands to their face. This natural position can help babies settle faster and sleep longer.
Unlike traditional swaddles that pin arms at the sides, the ARMS UP™ position supports your baby's natural startle reflex while reducing the risk of rolling. Always place your baby on their back for every sleep.
Understanding the 1.0 TOG rating
The Miffy Swaddle Up Starter Bundle has a 1.0 TOG rating, making it suitable for most room temperatures between 68-75°F (20-24°C). Always check your baby's temperature by feeling their chest or the back of their neck—not their hands or feet.
If the room is warmer, use lighter layers; if cooler, add a sleep sack over the swaddle (never add loose blankets). Avoid overheating, which is a risk factor for SIDS.
How to swaddle safely with the Miffy Swaddle Up Starter Bundle
- Prepare the swaddle: Lay the swaddle flat on a safe surface with the zipper open. Place your baby on their back, centered on the swaddle, with their shoulders aligned with the top edge. Always use a firm, flat surface—never a sofa or bed.
- Position your baby's arms: Gently place your baby's arms in the ARMS UP™ position, near their face. Zip the swaddle up, ensuring the arms stay inside the wing openings. Check that your baby's hands can reach their face for self-soothing but cannot slip out of the swaddle.
- Check the fit: Ensure the swaddle is snug around the chest and hips. You should be able to slide two fingers between the swaddle and your baby's chest, and there should be room for hip movement. A too-tight swaddle can restrict breathing; a too-loose one can ride up over the face.
- Monitor temperature: Check your baby's temperature after 20-30 minutes. Adjust layers if needed—the 1.0 TOG is ideal for 68-75°F (20-24°C). Never place loose blankets in the crib; use a sleep sack if extra warmth is needed.
- Know when to transition: Stop swaddling when your baby shows signs of rolling over, usually around 2-4 months. Switch to a sleep sack with arms free. Rolling is a sign to transition—swaddling after rolling increases SIDS risk.
