Quick answer
Use a random dungeon generator card deck to build unpredictable dungeon layouts and encounters for your RPG sessions without prep time.
Why use a card deck instead of digital tools?
A physical card deck keeps the whole table engaged and removes screen distractions. It also works without batteries or internet, making it ideal for travel or outdoor games.
Choosing your module style
Atmar's Cardography includes downloadable PDF modules for Fate Core and D&D 5th Edition. Decide beforehand which system you are using so you can download the correct module file.
Steps to run a random dungeon with the card deck
- Download the correct module PDF: Before your session, download the Fate Core or D&D 5th Edition PDF from the product page. Print or load it on a device for monster stats and magic item descriptions. Skipping this step means you will lack monster stats and item rules during play.
- Shuffle the deck and draw a starting tile: Shuffle all 52 cards. Draw the top card and place it face-up on the table. This becomes the first room or corridor of your dungeon. If you want a guided adventure, use the card order suggested in the module instead of random draw.
- Draw cards to build the dungeon layout: For each new area, draw another card and place it adjacent to existing tiles. Cards show room shapes, corridors, and special features. Connect them as you go to form a map. Do not rearrange cards after placing them — the random layout is part of the challenge.
- Resolve encounters using the module PDF: When a card indicates a monster or trap, consult the PDF for the corresponding 5E or Fate stats. Use the magic items and monsters described in the module to run the encounter. If a card shows a feature not covered in the PDF, improvise a simple challenge or treat it as flavor text.
- End the dungeon when the party reaches an exit or boss: The module includes a final boss encounter. Continue drawing until the party finds the exit card or defeats the boss. The deck can also be used as a story builder for custom settings. For longer campaigns, keep drawing cards after the boss to create a megadungeon.
