If you've ever browsed a Japanese figure store or scrolled through social media, you've probably seen the term Ichiban Kuji. These premium lottery-style figures are a staple of Japanese pop culture, offering fans a chance to win exclusive figures and merchandise from their favorite series. But what exactly are Ichiban Kuji figures, and how do you get them?
In this guide, we'll break down everything you need to know about Ichiban Kuji, from how the lottery works to practical tips for buying them online. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting out, this article will help you navigate the exciting world of Ichiban Kuji.
What Is Ichiban Kuji?
Ichiban Kuji is a popular lottery-style merchandise system in Japan, operated by Bandai Spirits. The name literally translates to 'first prize lottery.' Each Ichiban Kuji set features a series of prizes, ranging from A to Z, with A being the most coveted prize. These prizes often include high-quality figures, plushies, acrylic stands, and other collectibles from popular anime, manga, and game franchises.
Unlike regular retail products, Ichiban Kuji items are not sold directly. Instead, you purchase a lottery ticket, and each ticket guarantees you a prize. The thrill of not knowing exactly what you'll get is part of the fun. Many collectors love the excitement of pulling a rare prize, while others enjoy the challenge of collecting an entire set.
- Ichiban Kuji prizes are typically exclusive to the lottery and not available in standard retail stores.
How Does the Ichiban Kuji Lottery Work?
The Ichiban Kuji lottery works similarly to a raffle. Each ticket costs a fixed amount (usually around 700-900 yen in Japan), and when you purchase a ticket, you draw a small paper slip from a box. The slip reveals which prize you've won, ranging from the top A prize down to smaller consolation prizes. Once a prize is claimed, it's removed from the pool, so the availability of prizes changes as more tickets are sold.
In Japan, Ichiban Kuji is often held at convenience stores, hobby shops, and events. However, for international collectors, buying Ichiban Kuji online is the most convenient option. Many online stores, like Figure Start, offer Ichiban Kuji figures directly, allowing you to purchase specific prizes without the lottery element. This is a great way to guarantee you get the figure you want.
- Online stores often sell Ichiban Kuji prizes individually, so you can buy exactly what you want.
Why Are Ichiban Kuji Figures So Popular?
Ichiban Kuji figures are known for their exceptional quality and detail. Because they are designed as lottery prizes, they often feature unique poses, intricate paintwork, and exclusive accessories that set them apart from standard figures. For example, the Ichiban Kuji Dragon Ball EX The Red Ribbon Army Prize C General Blue Figure offers a detailed representation of a lesser-known character, making it a must-have for dedicated Dragon Ball collectors.

Another reason for their popularity is the element of surprise. The lottery system creates a sense of excitement and community, as fans share their pulls online. Additionally, Ichiban Kuji often features characters that rarely get figures, such as the Ichiban Kuji JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run Prize A Johnny Joestar Figure, which is a stunning depiction of the protagonist from the manga's seventh part.
