Quick answer
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Insulator wraps around a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle filled with hot liquid, then attaches to your pack's hip belt to keep your water from freezing on winter trips.
Why use an insulator instead of a thermos
A thermos adds weight and bulk. The Insulator lets you carry a standard Nalgene bottle, which is lighter and easier to refill. It also keeps the bottle accessible on your hip belt, so you don't have to dig through your pack.
How to use the Insulator
- Fill your bottle with hot liquid: Fill a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle with hot water, tea, or another warm beverage. Leave a little room at the top for expansion if the liquid freezes slightly. Common mistake: filling to the brim can cause the bottle to crack if the liquid expands as it freezes.
- Slide the Insulator over the bottle: Place the Insulator over the Nalgene bottle from the bottom, pulling it up until the bottle is fully covered. The neoprene-like material provides insulation. Check that the Velcro strap is accessible and not twisted before securing.
- Secure the Velcro strap around your hip belt: Thread your pack's hip belt through the Velcro strap on the Insulator, then fasten it snugly. The bottle will hang securely on your hip for easy access. Common mistake: leaving the strap too loose causes the bottle to swing and bounce while hiking.
