If you’re shopping for a new crib mattress, you’ve probably noticed that Newton Baby offers several bundles. The Essential Collection is one of the most popular—and for good reason. It combines the brand’s signature breathable mattress with a few practical accessories, all at a bundled price. But is it really the right choice for your nursery?
In this review, we’ll walk through exactly what’s included in the Newton Baby Essential Collection, who it’s best for, and where you might want to consider a different option. We’ll also compare it to the standalone Essential Crib Mattress and other bundles so you can make an informed decision.
Essential Crib Mattress
What’s in the Essential Collection?
The Newton Baby Essential Collection includes the Essential Crib Mattress, one waterproof mattress pad, and two fitted crib sheets. The mattress itself is the same breathable, washable design that Newton is known for: a food-grade polymer core that allows air to flow through, plus a firm, supportive surface that meets all federal safety standards. The waterproof pad adds an extra layer of protection against leaks and spills, and the two sheets give you a spare for quick changes during late-night messes.
What you won’t find in this bundle is a mattress cover or extra pads. The Essential Collection is designed to be a complete starter set: mattress, pad, and sheets. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive bundle that includes a travel crib or additional accessories, you might want to check out the Newton Baby bundle that pairs the mattress with the Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard. But for most families, the Essential Collection covers the basics without overcomplicating things.
- Essential Crib Mattress (breathable, firm, washable core)
- 1 waterproof mattress pad (fits standard crib mattresses)
- 2 fitted crib sheets (machine-washable, soft cotton)
Who Is the Essential Collection Best For?
This bundle is a solid fit for first-time parents who want a safe, easy-to-clean mattress without hunting for separate accessories. The included waterproof pad saves you a trip to the store, and having two sheets means you can rotate them during laundry day. It’s also a good choice if you’re on a budget but still want Newton’s breathable technology—the Essential Collection is typically priced lower than buying the mattress and accessories individually.
That said, if you already own a waterproof mattress pad or have a preference for organic cotton sheets, you might be better off buying the Essential Crib Mattress on its own and choosing your own accessories. Similarly, if you’re planning to use the mattress for a toddler bed later, you may want the Kids' Twin Mattress instead, which is designed for older children. The Essential Collection is really aimed at the newborn-to-toddler stage, and it does that job well.
- Best for: first-time parents, budget-conscious shoppers, those who want a complete starter set
- Skip if: you already have a pad and sheets, or need a twin-size mattress
How It Compares to Other Newton Bundles
Newton Baby offers several bundles, and the Essential Collection sits in the middle of the lineup. The most basic option is the standalone Essential Crib Mattress, which costs less but doesn’t include any accessories. On the other end, the Newton Baby bundle that includes the Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard is a much larger investment—great if you travel often, but overkill if you only need a mattress for the nursery.
The Essential Collection is also a step down from the Original Crib Mattress bundle, which includes a thicker mattress with a more premium cover. If you prioritize a plush feel or want the very best breathability rating, the Original line might be worth the extra cost. But for most families, the Essential Collection offers the same core safety features at a more accessible price point.
- Essential Collection: mattress + pad + sheets (mid-range price)
- Standalone Essential Crib Mattress: mattress only (lowest cost)
- Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard bundle: mattress + travel crib (highest cost, best for travelers)
Are There Any Downsides?
No product is perfect, and the Essential Collection has a few trade-offs. The waterproof pad that comes with the bundle is a basic model—it does the job, but it’s not as thick or absorbent as some premium pads you can buy separately. If your baby is a heavy spitter or you’re dealing with frequent diaper leaks, you might want to upgrade to the Waterproof Twin Mattress Pad for extra protection.
Another thing to note is that the sheets included are standard cotton, not organic. If you’re committed to using only organic materials, you’ll need to swap them out. That said, the sheets are soft and machine-washable, and they fit the mattress snugly, so they’re perfectly functional for most families. The real value of the bundle is in the convenience and the savings—not in premium fabric upgrades.
- Waterproof pad is basic, not premium
- Sheets are standard cotton, not organic
- Best value for convenience, not for luxury materials
The Newton Baby Essential Collection is a practical, cost-effective bundle that gives you everything you need to set up a safe sleep space for your baby. It’s not the most luxurious option, but it delivers the same breathable, washable mattress that Newton is known for, plus the accessories you’ll use every day. If you’re looking for a straightforward, no-fuss solution, this collection is absolutely worth considering.
