Quick answer

Set up the Owyhee 1P Dyneema Insert inside the Owyhee 1P Pro Dyneema Tent to create a dry, comfortable double-wall shelter for one person.

Why use the insert instead of going solo with just the fly?

The Owyhee 1P Dyneema Insert adds a breathable inner layer that prevents condensation from dripping onto your sleeping bag. In humid or rainy conditions, a single-wall tent can leave you damp. The insert gives you a dedicated sleeping area and a separate vestibule for gear, all while keeping weight low.

Setup steps

  1. Pitch the outer tent first: Set up the Owyhee 1P Pro Dyneema Tent as usual. Stake out the corners and adjust the pole tension so the fly is taut. A loose fly will make inserting the inner tent difficult and reduce weather protection. Check that all four corners are evenly tensioned before moving on.
  2. Attach the insert to the interior clips: Locate the clip loops sewn into the inner ceiling of the fly. Starting at the head end, clip the insert’s corner loops onto the corresponding hooks. Work your way around the perimeter, keeping the fabric smooth to avoid bunching. Common mistake: clipping the insert upside down. The zippered door should align with the tent’s main entrance.
  3. Stake out the insert floor: The insert floor has its own corner loops. Use lightweight stakes to pin them down, pulling the floor flat. This keeps the inner tent off the ground and prevents moisture wicking through the bathtub floor. If the ground is hard, use a rock or trekking pole handle to drive stakes without damaging them.
  4. Adjust the vestibule area: The insert covers the sleeping area but leaves the remaining third of the tent as a vestibule. Position your pack and boots in this space. Ensure the vestibule door can close fully without catching on gear. Keep wet gear in the vestibule to maintain a dry sleeping compartment.
  5. Final tension check: Walk around the tent and check that the fly is still taut and the insert isn’t sagging against the fly wall. If the insert touches the fly, condensation can transfer through. Adjust stakes or pole tension as needed. A small gap between insert and fly is essential for airflow and dryness.
