Quick answer

Choose the RAM Tough-Pole if you need a tall, articulating mount for a boat or flat surface. Choose the Handlebar U-Bolt mount if you need a secure, low-profile attachment to a handlebar or rail.

Mounting surface decides the winner

The Tough-Pole kit centers on a bulkhead/flat surface base with post, so it expects a deck, console, or other flat, drillable surface. The U-Bolt base clamps around a rail from 0.50" to 1.25" in diameter, with a composite adapter that can narrow the rail to 0.5". If you have a round bar, the U-Bolt is the only one of the two that fits without drilling.

That difference matters on a boat: a bulkhead base gives you a permanent, stable platform, while a U-Bolt on a grab rail is removable but depends on rail diameter. On a bike, the U-Bolt is the natural choice because handlebars are round; the Tough-Pole has no handlebar provision.

Camera attachment and articulation

The Tough-Pole ends in a universal action camera adapter, so it works with GoPro-style cameras out of the box. The U-Bolt mount uses a 1/4"-20 threaded stud, which suits cameras or accessories with a standard tripod thread. Neither kit includes a camera; check your camera's mounting interface before ordering.

The Tough-Pole's multi-arm design (C-size and B-size double socket arms) lets you position the camera high and adjust angle in several planes. The U-Bolt's single double socket arm gives one main pivot, which is usually enough for a handlebar view but less flexible for overhead shots.

Stability and vibration trade-offs

A longer arm assembly like the Tough-Pole can amplify vibration at speed, especially on a boat in chop. The U-Bolt's shorter, clamped connection is generally more rigid, but it transmits handlebar buzz directly. Neither mount includes vibration damping; if that is critical, plan to add a damping accessory or choose a different mount.

The Tough-Pole's bulkhead base is screwed down, so it is not quick to move between vehicles. The U-Bolt can be loosened and relocated, but you must check rail diameter each time and keep the cover caps on the exposed u-bolt ends.

Trade-offs at a glance

  • Mounting surface: Tough-Pole needs a flat, drillable surface; U-Bolt needs a round rail 0.50"–1.25" in diameter. Measure your rail or confirm your flat surface before choosing.
  • Camera interface: Tough-Pole includes a universal action camera adapter; U-Bolt provides a 1/4"-20 threaded stud. Check your camera's thread or adapter requirement.
  • Portability: Tough-Pole is screwed down and not quick to move; U-Bolt can be loosened and relocated. If you switch vehicles often, the U-Bolt is easier to transfer.

Product facts

  • RAM® Tough-Pole™ 38" Camera Mount with Bulkhead Base: Includes a bulkhead/flat surface base with post, 4" and 12" PVC pipes, C-size and B-size double socket arms, and a universal action camera adapter at the top. This kit gives you a tall, articulating mount for flat surfaces, but it requires drilling and is not quickly removable.
