Quick answer

Choose the RED Compact EVF standalone if you already have mounting accessories; pick the EVF Pack if you need the full kit to attach it to a DSMC3 camera.

What each option includes

The RED Compact EVF (product 2067922) is the viewfinder unit alone, with a micro-OLED 1080p display and user-assignable buttons for quick access to peaking, zoom, ISO, FPS, and white balance. It connects via a single cable to DSMC3 cameras.

The RED Compact EVF Pack (product 2067923) bundles the same viewfinder with all the necessary mounting hardware to attach it to a RED DSMC3 camera. It is compatible with KOMODO-X (after a February 2024 firmware update), V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR X, V-RAPTOR XL, and V-RAPTOR XL X.

Key trade-off: cost vs. completeness

The standalone EVF costs USD 2170 (catalog comparison price USD 3100), while the Pack costs USD 3036 (catalog comparison price USD 4400). The Pack adds roughly USD 866 for the mounting accessories.

If you already own a third-party mounting solution or a RED cage with an EVF mount, the standalone EVF saves you money. If you are starting fresh or want guaranteed compatibility, the Pack provides everything in one box.

Trade-offs at a glance

  • Standalone EVF: Best if you already have mounting hardware or a custom rig. Saves money but requires you to source your own attachment solution. Check your current cage or arm before buying; you may only need the viewfinder.
  • EVF Pack: Ideal for a first-time build or when you want guaranteed compatibility out of the box. Costs more but includes everything needed to mount on DSMC3 cameras. If you plan to switch between KOMODO-X, V-RAPTOR, or V-RAPTOR XL, the Pack's included accessories simplify changes.
  • Compatibility note: Both options work with DSMC3 cameras. The Pack explicitly lists KOMODO-X (with firmware update), V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR X, V-RAPTOR XL, and V-RAPTOR XL X. The standalone EVF is also DSMC3-compatible, but mounting accessories are not included. For KOMODO-X, ensure you apply the February 2024 firmware update regardless of which option you choose.
