Quick answer

The STARbrush coronal brush by Ultradent is designed for efficient prophylaxis in areas with restricted access. Use it with a slow-speed handpiece and prophy paste for safe, effective coronal polishing.

Why choose the STARbrush coronal brush?

The STARbrush coronal brush is specifically engineered for cleaning hard-to-reach areas during dental prophylaxis. Its compact design and soft bristles reduce the risk of gingival trauma while effectively removing plaque and stain.

This brush is a Reality Five Star Award Winner, reflecting its acceptance among dental professionals for consistent performance. It works best with a slow-speed handpiece and a fine-grit prophy paste.

Step-by-step prophy with STARbrush

  1. 1. Attach the brush to a slow-speed handpiece: Screw the STARbrush onto the handpiece until snug. Do not overtighten, as this can strip the threads or damage the brush hub. Check that the brush spins freely before applying paste.
  2. 2. Apply a small amount of prophy paste: Dispense a pea-sized amount of fine-grit prophy paste onto the bristles. Avoid using too much paste, which can splatter and reduce visibility. Use just enough to cover the tips of the bristles.
  3. 3. Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface: Gently place the rotating brush against the tooth at the gum line. Apply light pressure—let the bristles do the work. Common mistake: pressing too hard can cause gingival irritation. Keep the brush moving in short, overlapping strokes.
  4. 4. Polish each tooth for 2-3 seconds: Move systematically from posterior to anterior, spending no more than a few seconds per tooth. Over-polishing can damage enamel or restorations. Rinse the brush with water between quadrants to remove debris.
  5. 5. Rinse and inspect the mouth: After polishing, use the air-water syringe to rinse away paste residue. Check for any missed spots or remaining stain. If stain persists, repeat with a fresh application of paste.
