Quick Answer
In baseball, 'bad hops' refers to unpredictable, erratic bounces of a ground ball that make fielding difficult. The Jomboy Media 'Bad Hops - You missed the sign' tee celebrates a classic moment when a player misread the signs and paid the price.
How 'Bad Hops' Is Used in Baseball
Players and commentators use 'bad hops' to describe ground balls that take an unexpected bounce, often due to an uneven infield or spin on the ball. It's a term that captures the frustration of a fielder who does everything right but still gets beaten by the ball.
The phrase is also used more loosely to describe any unlucky break in the game, not just a physical bounce. When a ball finds a hole or a deflection goes the wrong way, you might hear someone mutter 'bad hops' as a way to explain the outcome.
