Quick answer
Bra straps fall down most often because the band is too loose, the straps are over-tightened, or the strap material has lost grip. Start by checking your band fit: if you can pull it more than two inches away from your back, you need a smaller band size. If the band fits, try a strap clip or a simple stitch to shorten the strap at the back—no new bra required.
Why your bra straps keep slipping
The most common reason straps fall is a loose band. The band provides 80% of your bra's support; when it rides up, the straps have to compensate and they slide off your shoulders. Other causes include stretched-out elastic, a too-wide strap placement for your shoulder slope, or simply that the bra is worn out.
If your bra band feels snug but straps still slip, check the strap material. Some fabrics, like the all-natural TENCEL™ used in The Very Good Bra's V for Victory Bra, have a different texture than synthetic straps and may feel smoother against the skin. That doesn't mean they're defective—it just means you may need a different adjustment method.
How to stop bra straps slipping without buying a new bra
Try these fixes in order, stopping when the problem is solved. First, adjust the band: loosen the straps completely, then tighten the band one row of hooks. If the band now feels too tight, you may need a different size in that style. Next, adjust the straps only enough to lift the cups—over-tightening actually pulls the straps toward your neck and causes slipping.
If adjustments don't work, add a strap clip (a small plastic or metal connector that pulls the straps together at the back) or hand-stitch a small loop of elastic at the back of each strap to shorten it. Both are temporary, invisible fixes that cost almost nothing.
For bras with removable pads like the V for Victory Bra, removing the pads can change the fit slightly and sometimes reduce strap slipping. Try it and see if the straps stay put.
When to consider a different bra instead of fixing straps
If you've tried all the fixes and straps still fall, the bra may simply be the wrong size or shape for your body. A bra that fits well should stay in place without constant adjustment. That's a sign to look for a style with a different strap placement or a wider band.
The Very Good Bra's V for Victory Bra comes in sizes up to a G cup and offers a full-coverage, wireless design. The Rum & Raisin color has a bit more stretch in the band, so if you're between band sizes, sizing down one band in that color can help prevent straps from slipping. The Latte version uses organic cotton with discreet pad pockets—keeping the pads in may add a little weight that helps straps stay put.
Diagnosis: Find your strap slipping fix
- Symptom: Straps fall down even when tightened all the way. Likely cause: Band is too loose.
- Check band fit: Put on the bra and pull the band away from your back. If you can pull it more than 2 inches, go down a band size or tighten the hooks. If band fits snugly, move to strap adjustment.
- Check strap tension: Loosen straps completely, then tighten only enough to lift the cups without digging in. Over-tightening pulls straps toward your neck. If straps still slip, try a strap clip or stitch.
- Consider the bra design: Some strap materials (like TENCEL™ in the V for Victory Bra) are smoother and may need a different adjustment. Removable pads can also affect fit. If none of the above works, the bra may not suit your shoulder shape.
Products that can help with strap fit
- V for Victory Bra - Rum & Raisin with removable pads: A wireless, full-coverage bra in a warm, rich brown - to wear with or without removable pads, in sizes up to a G cup. Made from 100% Lenzing TENCEL™ with all-natural, plastic-free materials throughout. Sizing note: Rum & Raisin has a little more stretch in the band than our other styles. If you're on the cusp between band sizes, we recommend sizing down one band in this colour. If you're between band sizes, choosing the smaller band in this color can eliminate the loose band that causes straps to slip.
- V for Victory Bra - Latte with removable pads: Our first organic cotton padded bra, made with discreet pockets for an optional pad if required. The bra will arrive with pads in the pockets. At present, we are unable to offer the option to remove the pads so we hope you can find a use for them even if not your first choice. Keeping the pads in adds a small amount of weight that may help straps stay on your shoulders. If you prefer no pads, the fixed pads are a limitation to consider.
