Quick answer
Choose the Alter Genesis SM12 Japanese booster if you want a classic Sun & Moon era pack with 5 cards per pack. Pick Battle Partners SV9 if you prefer the latest Scarlet & Violet mechanics and a wider card pool.
Era differences matter for gameplay and collection
The Sun & Moon series (Alter Genesis SM12) introduced Tag Team cards and a different energy system compared to the current Scarlet & Violet era (Battle Partners SV9). If you play the TCG competitively, the newer set includes VSTAR and ex mechanics that are legal in today's Standard format.
For collectors, Alter Genesis offers a nostalgic look at the Sun & Moon block, with exclusive Japanese-only artwork and a smaller card pool that makes completing a master set more achievable. Battle Partners, on the other hand, has a larger set list and includes popular Pokemon like Pikachu and Eevee evolutions.
Pack size and value considerations
The Alter Genesis SM12 Japanese booster pack contains 5 cards, while Battle Partners SV9 packs typically contain 5 cards as well. The key difference is the card pool size and the presence of guaranteed hits: Japanese booster packs from Sun & Moon often have a fixed rare slot, whereas Scarlet & Violet packs may include reverse holos or other parallel foils.
Pricing can vary based on availability and demand. Alter Genesis packs are from a completed set, so their price is more stable, while Battle Partners packs may fluctuate with the competitive meta.
