Quick answer
Most suction loss in aquarium siphons comes from air leaks or blockages. Check the seal, clear the nozzle, and restart the flow.
Why siphons lose suction
A siphon works by gravity pulling water through the tube. If air gets into the line, the water column breaks and flow stops. This often happens when the tube kinks, the nozzle sits above water, or debris clogs the opening.
With adjustable siphons, the telescoping sections can develop tiny gaps over time. A loose connection lets air in and kills the siphon. For pipette-style cleaners, the narrow tip can trap particles and block flow.
Tools you already have
You do not need special gear. A bucket, your siphon, and a few seconds of patience are enough. If the siphon uses a check valve or priming bulb, inspect that part first.
Diagnosis and fix
- Symptom: Water trickles or stops completely after a few seconds.
- Likely cause: Air leak at a connection, kinked tube, or debris blocking the nozzle.
- Corrective action: 1) Check all tube connections are tight. 2) Straighten any kinks. 3) Submerge the nozzle fully and shake gently to dislodge debris. 4) Restart the siphon by filling the tube with water or using a priming bulb. If flow still stops, inspect the nozzle for a stuck particle. Use a pipette or a thin wire to clear it.
- Stop or choose another option: If the siphon body is cracked or the seal is permanently damaged, replace it. A nano siphon or a pipette may work better for small or planted tanks.
Products that help
-
Nano Aquarium Siphon Gravel Vacuum - Adjustable 25-100cm: The nano siphon gravel vacuum has a detachable nozzle to create four different lengths. Its small nozzle works in and around plants without disturbing the aquascape. If your siphon keeps losing suction because the nozzle is too large for tight spaces, this adjustable design lets you match the length and tip size to your tank.

Aquarium Large Cleaning Siphon Pipette: The large cleaning siphon pipette holds up to 30ml and is made from 100% aquatic-safe material. It is useful for removing debris behind décor and in nano tanks. When a full-size siphon loses suction because of a clog, a pipette gives you direct control for spot-cleaning without restarting the main siphon.
