Quick answer

Yes, Lenormand meanings printed directly on the cards can help beginners learn faster by removing the need to memorize traditional card definitions, but only if the deck includes extra context like the card's image and a clear meaning.

The myth vs. the reality

A common belief is that having meanings on Lenormand cards makes the deck too easy or turns it into an oracle deck, losing the true Lenormand system. In reality, the printed meaning acts as a training wheel: it gives you the core interpretation while you build familiarity with the card's position and combinations. Once you're comfortable, you can rely less on the text.

The trade-off is that not all Lenormand decks include meanings. Standard 36-card sets usually come with a separate guidebook, which means flipping pages or memorizing. Extended Lenormand decks with meanings on the cards let you focus on the reading itself, not the lookup.

Verdicts on the claim

  • Claim: Meanings on cards make learning faster: True for the initial phase. With the meaning right there, you don't pause to check a book. This reduces friction and builds confidence.
  • Claim: It turns Lenormand into an oracle deck: Partly true. The cards can be used as oracle cards because the meaning is written on them, but the deck still follows Lenormand structure and pairing logic. You get both systems in one deck.
  • Claim: Extended decks (45 cards) are harder for beginners: False. The extra nine cards add nuance, not complexity. Each card still has its meaning printed, so the learning curve stays low. If you want a deck that works for both intuitive oracle-style readings and traditional Lenormand spreads, an extended deck with meanings is a solid choice.
