Quick answer
Cat-Eyed Boy: The Perfect Edition, Vol. 1 is a deluxe horror manga collection from master Kazuo Umezz, perfect for fans of classic Japanese horror and collectors seeking a high-quality edition.
What makes this edition special
The Perfect Edition brings together five classic horror stories featuring the enigmatic Cat-Eyed Boy, a creature hated by both humans and demons. Kazuo Umezz, creator of The Drifting Classroom and Orochi, delivers unsettling tales that blend folklore with psychological dread.
This volume is a deluxe hardcover, offering a sturdier format than standard manga. The larger trim size and higher-quality paper enhance the detailed, often grotesque artwork that Umezz is known for.
Who is Cat-Eyed Boy for?
If you enjoy horror manga that leans into folklore and moral ambiguity, Cat-Eyed Boy is a strong choice. The stories are more atmospheric than jump-scare focused, with a slow-burn creepiness that rewards patient readers.
Fans of Junji Ito may find similarities in the grotesque body horror and existential dread, but Umezz's work has a distinct, more mythic tone. It's not a direct comparison—both are masters, but their styles differ.
Format and value considerations
The catalog price is USD 15.49, compared to USD 24.99, making it a good deal for a deluxe edition. However, if you prefer smaller, more portable manga volumes, the larger trim size might be less convenient for reading on the go.
This volume collects stories that were originally published in the 1960s and 70s. The art style is vintage, which adds charm but may feel dated to readers accustomed to modern manga aesthetics.
