Quick answer

Clean your NEMESIS 4.2 GTX® with a soft brush and lukewarm water, then apply a spray-on waterproofing treatment while the shoe is still damp. Let them air-dry away from direct heat.

Why the NEMESIS 4.2 GTX® needs a different touch

The NEMESIS 4.2 GTX® is a tactical low-cut shoe built for speed and agility. Its lower profile and lighter build mean you can clean it more quickly than a tall leather boot, but the same GORE-TEX waterproof membrane still needs care. Avoid stiff brushes and harsh detergents that can damage the membrane or the upper’s water-repellent finish.

Because this is a low-cut shoe, mud and grit tend to collect around the collar and tongue. Pay extra attention to those areas, and rinse the inside only if necessary—never soak the shoe.

How often should you reproof?

Reproof when water stops beading on the upper. For regular weekend use, that is usually every 4–6 weeks; for occasional wear, once a season is enough. If you hike in wet conditions often, check the beading after each trip and reproof as soon as it fades.

Step-by-step cleaning and reproofing

  1. Remove loose dirt and laces: Take out the laces and insole, then brush off dried mud with a soft brush. Rinse the shoe under lukewarm water—never use hot water, which can damage the membrane.
  2. Wash the upper: Use a mild soap or dedicated gear cleaner and a soft brush. Work in circles on the upper, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid detergents, bleach, or fabric softener—they leave residue that attracts water.
  3. Clean the inside: Wipe the interior with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Do not submerge the shoe. Rinse the cloth and wipe again to remove soap residue.
  4. Air-dry: Stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels and let them air-dry at room temperature, away from radiators or direct sunlight. Never use a tumble dryer or hair dryer—heat can delaminate the sole and damage the GORE-TEX membrane.
  5. Apply waterproofing treatment: While the shoe is still slightly damp, spray a waterproofing product evenly over the entire upper, holding the can 20 cm away. Use a spray designed for GORE-TEX footwear. Pay extra attention to the collar and tongue. Check the label: some sprays are not suitable for GORE-TEX; choose one that is.
  6. Let the treatment cure: Allow the shoes to air-dry completely for at least 24 hours before wearing them. This lets the waterproofing bond to the upper.
  7. Re-lace and test: Put the laces and insole back in. Test the beading by sprinkling a few drops of water on the upper—if it beads up, you are done. If not, apply a second light coat.
