Quick answer
For collectors, the Gen Con exclusive Zatanna Zatara promo offers rare event provenance, while the Beast Boy promo card is a budget-friendly pick for players who want a versatile Super Hero without the Kickstarter markup.
Why promo cards matter in the DC Deck-Building Game
Promo cards are not essential to play, but they add unique abilities and collectible value to your deck. Because they are released in limited runs—often tied to events like Gen Con or Kickstarter campaigns—they can be harder to find later. Knowing the origin and availability of each promo helps you decide whether to buy for gameplay or display.
Event exclusivity vs. general availability
The Zatanna Zatara promo was originally created for Gen Con 2022, making it an event-exclusive card that may appeal to collectors who value convention memorabilia. The Beast Boy promo debuted through the DC Deck-Building Game 10th Anniversary Kickstarter, so its initial distribution was crowdfunding-based. Both cards are now sold individually at retail, but their limited-edition status still influences long-term rarity.
How to choose your DC Deck-Building promo card
- Prioritize your goal: collector or player: If you value event provenance and rarity, the Zatanna Zatara Gen Con exclusive is the stronger collectible. If you want a playable card at a lower price, the Beast Boy promo offers similar utility for less.
- Check your deck's Super Hero synergy: Beast Boy and Zatanna Zatara are both Super Hero cards, so they fit into any DC Deck-Building Game base set or expansion. Review the card abilities (printed on the card) to see which one complements your existing strategy. If you run a heavy-attack deck, Beast Boy's Titan heritage may align better; if you prefer control or trickery, Zatanna's magical theme could be a better fit.
- Compare price and availability: The Beast Boy promo is listed at USD 3.39 (down from USD 4.99), while the Zatanna Zatara promo is USD 2.99 (down from USD 4.99). Both are currently available as single cards. International buyers should note that Zatanna Zatara is also sold on eBay for broader access. At similar price points, the deciding factor is usually exclusivity preference rather than cost.
