Quick answer
Choose the Essential Bassinet if your priority is a dedicated newborn sleep space with a breathe-thru Wovenaire mattress and a largest-in-class 35" x 19" surface. Choose the Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard if you need one portable sleep space that also works for play and travel. Many families use both: the bassinet for the first months, then the travel crib as baby grows and you start moving around.
Essential Bassinet
If you are comparing a deluxe travel crib vs bassinet, the decision usually comes down to one question: do you want a dedicated newborn bed, or one portable sleep space that adapts as your baby grows? The Essential Bassinet and the Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard solve different problems, and neither is a wasted purchase if you match it to your space and routine.
This comparison uses the supplied catalog facts for both products, so you can see exactly where they differ on sleep surface, breathability, portability, and price. We will also cover the trade-offs you accept with each option and who should skip one in favor of the other.
Sleep surface and breathability
The Essential Bassinet uses a Wovenaire breathe-thru mattress and a 35" x 19" sleep surface, described as largest-in-class. That matters for airflow around your baby and for how long the bassinet stays usable as your newborn grows. The fabric is machine washable, and the sides are breathable mesh, so you are not fighting trapped heat or a mattress that cannot be cleaned.
The Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard pairs with Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard Sheets made from ultra-breathable cotton muslin. Those sheets are designed specifically for the Deluxe Travel Crib floor mattress and feature a snug fit. Note that bassinet attachment sheets are not available at this time, so if you want a bassinet with its own fitted sheet option, the Essential Bassinet is the more complete package.
- Check the sleep surface dimensions against your available floor or bedside space before buying.
- If breathability is your top concern, compare the Wovenaire mattress in the bassinet with the muslin sheet setup on the travel crib.
Portability and travel
The Essential Bassinet weighs 15 lbs, assembles without tools, and packs flat for easy travel. It also has a built-in storage shelf, which is genuinely useful when you are setting up a sleep space in a hotel or a relative's house and do not want diapers and wipes scattered on the floor.
The Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard is the more obvious travel crib for newborns and older babies because it is designed as a play yard and floor mattress setup. If you want one portable baby sleep space that doubles as a play area, the travel crib is the more flexible pick. If you want a bedside sleeper with a dedicated mattress, the bassinet is the better fit.
- Measure your car trunk or travel bag before assuming either option packs small enough for your trips.
- If you travel frequently by air, compare the packed dimensions of each product rather than the assembled size.
Price and long-term value
At catalog prices, the Essential Bassinet is USD 131.99 compared with a USD 199.99 comparison price, and the Essential Crib Mattress is also USD 131.99 compared with a USD 199.99 comparison price. The Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard Sheets are USD 25.99 compared with a USD 39.99 comparison price. These are catalog figures, so check the current price before you buy.
The bassinet is a newborn-focused purchase that you will eventually replace with a crib. The travel crib is a longer-use purchase that can serve as a play yard and travel bed. If you want the lowest entry price for a dedicated newborn sleep space, the bassinet is the simpler buy. If you want one product that covers more stages, the travel crib usually wins on cost per year of use.
- Factor in the cost of sheets and any extra covers when comparing total spend.
- The Essential Crib Mattress and Extra Essential Crib Mattress Cover are part of the Newton Essentials collection and are excluded from sitewide sales and individual promotional offers.
Setup, cleaning, and everyday use
The Essential Bassinet has machine-washable fabric and breathable mesh sides, plus tool-free assembly. That combination makes middle-of-the-night cleanup less painful and setup possible without hunting for a screwdriver. The built-in storage shelf keeps essentials within reach, which matters more than it sounds when you are half awake.
The Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard Sheets are machine-friendly cotton muslin and designed for a snug fit on the floor mattress. If you already own the travel crib, buying a spare set of sheets is the practical move so you are not washing the only set at 2 a.m. If you own the bassinet, check whether the bassinet attachment sheets are available before you plan around them.
- Buy at least two sheet sets for whichever sleep space you choose.
- Keep a waterproof pad in the rotation to reduce how often the main mattress or sheet needs a full wash.
Trade-offs to weigh before you decide
- Dedicated newborn bed vs. multi-stage sleep space: The Essential Bassinet is built as a newborn sleep space with a Wovenaire breathe-thru mattress and a 35" x 19" surface. If you want one product that also works for play and travel, pick the travel crib.
- Sheet availability: Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard Sheets are available and designed for the floor mattress. Bassinet attachment sheets are not available at this time. If you want a bassinet with a matching sheet option, the Essential Bassinet is the more complete package. If you already own the travel crib, stock up on the muslin sheets.

Product facts that decide this comparison
- Essential Bassinet: The only standalone bassinet with a Wovenaire breathe-thru mattress for optimal airflow, reducing suffocation risk and keeping baby comfortable. It has a largest-in-class sleep surface (35" x 19"), machine-washable fabric and breathable mesh sides, weighs 15 lbs, assembles without tools, packs flat for travel, and includes a built-in storage shelf. It is non-toxic and GREENGUARD Gold certified. If you want a dedicated newborn sleep space with a breathable mattress and a large surface, this is the stronger choice. The flat-pack and tool-free setup also make it realistic for travel and small spaces.
- Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard Sheets: Designed specifically for the Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard floor mattress, these ultra-breathable cotton muslin sheets are supremely soft and feature a snug fit. These sheets are for the Deluxe Travel Crib floor mattress only. Bassinet attachment sheets are not available at this time. If you choose the travel crib, you get a breathable muslin sheet option with a snug fit. If you want a bassinet with dedicated sheets, the Essential Bassinet is the more complete setup because bassinet attachment sheets are not available.
- Essential Crib Mattress: The ultra-breathable and washable crib mattress is 4 inches thick and features a soft, eyelet removable cover. It is part of the Newton Essentials collection and is excluded from sitewide sales and any individual promotional offers. This is the eventual next step after a bassinet. Knowing it is excluded from promotions helps you plan the total cost of your sleep setup rather than being surprised at checkout.
