Quick answer

For true travel use, the Diaper Genie Portable Diaper Bag Refill is the better choice because it fits in a diaper bag and includes scented bags. A standard pail refill works only if you have a compatible pail at your destination and don't mind carrying a larger refill pack.

What makes a travel diaper refill different

A standard pail refill is designed for stationary use inside a Diaper Genie pail at home. It uses continuous film or pre-attached bags that are too bulky to carry in a diaper bag. The Portable Diaper Bag Refill, on the other hand, is made specifically for the Diaper Genie portable dispenser. It comes with 25 lavender-scented bags that fit in a compact dispenser you can toss in your bag or stroller.

The key difference is portability. A standard refill holds hundreds of diapers but requires a full-size pail. The portable refill holds fewer diapers per pack but lets you dispose of diapers immediately while out, without needing a pail nearby.

Tradeoffs at a glance

  • Capacity vs. portability: Standard refills hold up to 810 diapers but require a pail. Portable refills hold 25 bags but fit in your bag. Choose based on where you change most diapers.
  • Odor control method: Standard refills seal odors inside the pail with continuous film. Portable refills use lavender-scented bags to mask odors on the go. Scented bags are helpful in public spaces but less effective for long-term odor lock.
  • Compatibility: Standard refills only work with specific Diaper Genie pail models. The portable refill works only with the Diaper Genie portable dispenser. Check your existing hardware before buying.
