Quick answer
If you own Dwellings of Eldervale Second Edition and want the Shapeshifter as a playable mercenary without hunting down a First Edition, this mini expansion is the straightforward way to get it. It's a small add-on that fills a specific gap, not a game-changing expansion.
Why this expansion exists
The Shapeshifter was originally part of the Standard First Edition of Dwellings of Eldervale. When the Second Edition launched, it wasn't included in the base box, so players who wanted that mini had to look elsewhere. This standalone release brings the miniature, a standee, and the matching game card together so Second Edition owners can add the mercenary without buying an older copy.
Because the rules for play are included in all versions of the game, you don't need a separate rulebook. That makes this a clean, low-friction purchase if you're already comfortable with the base game.
Trade-offs to consider
The main trade-off is value: at $6.59 (compared to $9.99), you're paying for one miniature, one standee, and one card. If you rarely use mercenaries or prefer to keep your collection lean, this might feel like a minor addition. On the other hand, if you enjoy variety in mercenary options, the cost is modest.
Another consideration: this is not a new mechanic or a big box of content. It's a single mercenary that slots into the existing system. If you're hoping for a substantial expansion, this isn't it.
Decision rules for buying the Shapeshifter Mercenary
- Own Dwellings of Eldervale Second Edition?: If yes, this expansion is the intended way to get the Shapeshifter. If you own First Edition, you likely already have it, so skip this. Check your edition before ordering.
- Do you enjoy using mercenaries?: If you regularly rotate mercenaries for variety, this adds a new option. If you rarely use them, the single card may not justify the cost.
- Are you a completionist collector?: If you want the full set of mercenaries or the exclusive miniature, this is a low-cost way to complete your collection. If not, you can pass without missing core gameplay. Weigh collection value against gameplay value.
