Quick Answer
Use a CPL filter to cut surface glare and darken skies above water; switch to an Aqua Filter set when you dive below the surface to restore natural color lost to depth.
Why One Filter Can't Do Both Jobs
A CPL (circular polarizer) works by blocking specific light angles. That makes it great for managing reflections on the water surface and making skies pop in above-water shots. But the moment you submerge, light behaves differently — you lose reds and oranges first, and a polarizer can't bring them back. That's where an Aqua Filter set takes over, adding color compensation at depth.
The trade-off: a CPL is a single, permanent filter. An Aqua set gives you multiple interchangeable filters for different depths, but you have to swap them as you descend or ascend.
Your Decision Rules
- Above water or surface shots only: Choose the CPL filter. It reduces glare from water, wet rocks, or glass and deepens blue skies. No filter swapping needed.
- Diving below 3 feet (1 meter): Pick an Aqua Filter set. The CPL cannot restore lost reds and oranges. The Aqua's depth-specific filters keep colors natural as you go deeper. Check your GoPro model: the 5-filter set fits Hero 7/6/5; the 3-filter set fits protective housing models.
- Mixed surface and shallow dive (up to ~10 ft): Start with the CPL for above-water clips, then switch to the Aqua's shallowest filter once submerged. Carry both if your day includes both environments.

Cinema CPL Filter - HERO 12 / 11 / 10 / 9: CPL Filter for GoPro 12, 11, 10 & 9 Black allows for suppressing surface glare, taking dynamic landscape photography, darken skies and manage reflections. If you shoot above water or just at the surface, this single filter handles glare and sky contrast without needing to swap anything.

Aqua Filter - Hero 7/6/5: Aqua Filter for Hero 7/6/5 includes five interchangeable filters at varying depth for versatile diving adventures. Five filters mean you can fine-tune color correction as you go deeper, but you'll need the right GoPro model and be ready to swap mid-dive.

Who Each Filter Fits Best
Best for
- Surf, lake, or pool shooters who stay above the surface or just below it
- Divers who need color correction at multiple depths and don't mind swapping filters
Not ideal for
- Divers who descend past 10 feet and expect the CPL to fix color — it won't
- Surface-only shooters who want to carry a bulky filter set with multiple pieces they won't use
