Quick answer
Choose a fitted cot sheet made from soft, breathable organic cotton with a secure elastic edge to ensure a snug, safe fit for your baby's crib mattress.
Why fabric matters for your baby's comfort
Babies have sensitive skin that can react to harsh chemicals or synthetic fibers. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, making it a gentler choice. A blend with a small amount of elastane (like 5%) adds stretch for easier fitting while keeping the sheet soft and breathable.
The importance of a secure fit
A loose or ill-fitting sheet can bunch up and create a suffocation hazard. Always look for sheets with deep pockets and strong elastic all around. Measure your mattress thickness before buying, as cot mattresses vary. The sheet should fit snugly without excess fabric that could come loose during sleep.
Your decision rules for choosing a cot sheet
- Check the fabric composition: Look for a high percentage of organic cotton (at least 95%) for softness and breathability. A small amount of elastane (around 5%) helps the sheet stretch to fit the mattress securely. Organic cotton with a touch of elastane offers both comfort and a secure fit.
- Measure your mattress: Cot mattress thickness can vary from 4 to 8 inches. Measure the depth of your mattress and choose a sheet with deep enough pockets to cover it completely without slipping off.
- Check the elastic quality: A sheet with elastic all the way around the edge will stay in place better than one with elastic only at the corners. Test the elastic by stretching it gently; it should snap back firmly. All-around elastic provides the most secure fit.
- Consider the print and color: Choose a pattern that matches your nursery theme and appeals to you. Lighter colors may show stains more easily, while darker prints can hide them.
