Quick answer

For small breed dogs, prioritize a formula with smaller kibble, higher protein and fat for faster metabolism, and joint-supporting nutrients. Fromm Gold Small Breed Adult and Diamond Naturals Small Breed Lamb and Rice are strong choices; Honest Kitchen Keen Whole Grain Turkey offers a whole-food alternative.

Why small breed dogs need different nutrition

Small breed dogs have faster metabolisms and smaller stomachs than larger breeds. They often need a diet higher in calories per pound to maintain energy levels, and smaller kibble size to prevent choking and encourage proper chewing. Look for formulas labeled for small breeds, which typically address these needs.

Key ingredients to look for

Quality protein sources like chicken, lamb, or turkey should be first on the ingredient list. Healthy fats from chicken fat or salmon oil provide concentrated energy. Whole grains like oatmeal, barley, and brown rice offer digestible carbohydrates. Avoid fillers like corn, wheat, or soy if your dog has sensitivities.

Decision rules for choosing small breed dog food

  • Check the first five ingredients: Ensure a named animal protein (chicken, lamb, turkey, fish) is first. Avoid foods where grains or by-products appear before protein.
  • Match kibble size to your dog: Small breed formulas have smaller kibble. If the bag doesn't specify size, look at the guaranteed analysis or call the brand. Small kibble helps prevent choking and makes eating easier for tiny mouths.
  • Consider your dog's activity level: Active small dogs need more calories and fat. Fromm Gold has chicken fat and salmon oil for energy; Honest Kitchen uses flaxseed and turkey for a leaner profile.
  • Factor in food sensitivities: If your dog has allergies, choose a limited ingredient or novel protein diet like Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice or Honest Kitchen Turkey.
