Quick answer
For a cot or Moses basket, choose a fitted sheet that matches your mattress dimensions exactly, is made from breathable natural fibers like cotton or organic linen, and has secure elastic edges to prevent bunching.
Why size and fit matter most
A fitted sheet that is too loose can bunch up and create a suffocation risk, while one that is too tight may not stay in place or could damage the mattress. Always measure your mattress length, width, and depth before buying. Most standard crib mattresses are around 35x80cm, but Moses baskets and travel cots vary widely. The Bugaboo Stardust Travel Cot, for example, has a mattress size of 91x51cm, so a sheet designed for a standard crib won't fit.
Fabric choice: cotton vs. organic linen
Cotton is a classic choice because it's soft, breathable, and easy to care for. Many parents prefer organic cotton or linen blends to avoid pesticide residues and because these materials often regulate temperature better. The Little Green Sheep Organic Crib Fitted Sheet uses a linen-cotton blend that is wash-tested for softness and breathable to help regulate your baby's temperature. If you want a pure cotton option at a lower price, a 100% cotton sheet like the Mamas & Papas Carrycot / Moses Fitted Sheet 2 Pack is machine washable and tumble dryable for convenience.
Safety considerations
Safety standards require that fitted sheets fit snugly and do not come off easily. Never use a sheet that is not designed for your specific mattress or cot model. Check that the elastic is strong and runs all around the sheet, not just at the corners. Also, avoid sheets with loose strings, ribbons, or decorations that could pose a choking hazard. The Mamas & Papas sheet includes a safety warning about never using the sheet unless it fits properly.
How to choose the right fitted sheet
- 1. Measure your mattress: Measure the length, width, and depth (thickness) of your cot or Moses basket mattress. Write down the exact dimensions. A sheet that matches these dimensions will fit snugly and safely.
- 2. Choose a breathable natural fabric: Look for 100% cotton, organic cotton, or linen-cotton blends. These materials are soft, breathable, and help regulate your baby's temperature. Avoid synthetic fabrics that can trap heat.
- 3. Check the elastic and fit: Ensure the sheet has strong elastic all around (not just at corners) and that it fits the mattress depth. The sheet should not slide off or bunch up when you tug it gently. If the sheet lifts off the mattress easily, it's not safe to use.
- 4. Consider your care routine: Most cotton sheets are machine washable at 40°C and can be tumble dried on low. If you prefer low maintenance, a cotton sheet like the Mamas & Papas 2-pack is a practical choice. Having two sheets in rotation makes laundry day easier.
- 5. Decide on organic if it matters to you: If you want to avoid pesticides and prefer a temperature-regulating fabric, choose an organic linen-cotton blend like The Little Green Sheep sheet. It costs a bit more but offers added breathability. Organic sheets are a good choice for sensitive skin or warm sleepers.
