Quick answer
Clean a 14-inch lion or Bengal tiger plush with a surface wash first: brush the fur, spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, rinse with a clean damp cloth, then air-dry completely away from direct heat. Reserve machine washing for stubborn cases and only if the care label allows it.
Why a 14-inch plush needs a gentler routine
At 14 inches, these plush animals are small enough to handle easily but still have a lot of surface fur that can mat or lose its softness if soaked too long or dried too hot. A surface wash removes dust and light marks without saturating the stuffing, which is the main reason plush toys lose their shape.
The biggest exception is heavy soiling or a full wash request from the care label. In that case, use a mesh laundry bag and a cold, gentle cycle, then reshape the plush while it is still damp.
What to check before you start
Look for loose stitching, glued-on eyes or noses, and any battery or sound pack. If the plush has a sound box or glued features, skip full immersion and stick to spot cleaning. If the care label is missing, treat the plush as surface-wash-only.
Use a soft brush or comb to loosen surface debris before washing. This one step prevents dirt from being pushed deeper into the fur during cleaning.
Step-by-step cleaning routine
- Brush out loose dirt: Use a soft-bristled brush or wide-tooth comb to gently work through the fur, starting at the edges and moving toward the center. Shake the plush over a bin to release dust. Do not brush hard against the pile; it can pull the fur and leave a rough texture.
- Spot-clean with mild soap: Mix a few drops of mild liquid soap in a bowl of cool water. Dampen a microfiber cloth, wring it out well, and dab the soiled areas without soaking the fabric. Check a hidden seam first to make sure the soap does not discolor the fur.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth: Wipe away soap residue using a second clean cloth dampened with plain water. Repeat until the cloth picks up no more suds. Leftover soap attracts dirt and makes the fur feel stiff once dry.
- Blot and reshape: Press a dry towel against the damp areas to absorb excess moisture. Gently fluff the fur and reshape the lion's mane or tiger's stripes with your fingers. Reshape while damp; once the plush dries, the shape is harder to adjust.
- Air-dry away from heat: Place the plush in a well-ventilated spot, away from radiators, direct sun, or a hot dryer. Turn it over halfway through drying so both sides dry evenly. Heat can shrink or melt synthetic fur, so never use a hot dryer or hairdryer.
- Brush again when dry: Once the plush is completely dry, brush the fur lightly to restore softness and lift any flattened areas. If the plush still feels damp at the seams, let it air-dry longer before storing.
