Quick answer

Fit your Kumo 36 by adjusting the hipbelt, shoulder straps, and load lifters so the pack sits snugly on your hips and follows your back's natural curve without pressure points.

Why frameless fitting is different

The Kumo 36 uses a frameless design to save weight, which means the pack's shape comes from how you pack and adjust it. Without a frame, the load transfers directly to your hips and shoulders, so proper adjustment is critical for comfort on summer hikes.

A common mistake is overtightening the shoulder straps to compensate for a loose hipbelt. This creates pressure on your shoulders and can cause fatigue quickly.

Step-by-step fitting guide

  1. Pack your gear first: Load the pack with your summer hiking gear before adjusting. A frameless pack needs a full, balanced load to fit correctly. Place soft items like a sleeping bag against your back and heavier items close to your spine. An empty or poorly packed frameless pack will never fit well.
  2. Loosen all straps: Unclip the hipbelt, loosen the shoulder straps, and release the load lifters. Start with everything loose so you can build tension evenly from the bottom up. Skipping this step leads to uneven tension and discomfort.
  3. Secure the hipbelt: Center the hipbelt over your hip bones and tighten it firmly. The hipbelt should carry 70-80% of the pack's weight. If the hipbelt sits above or below your hip bones, adjust the torso length by moving the shoulder strap attachment points on the pack. If the hipbelt doesn't sit on your hip bones, the pack torso length may not be right for you.
  4. Tighten the shoulder straps: Pull the shoulder straps snug so they follow your shoulder contour without gaping. The straps should not dig into your armpits or pull back on your shoulders. A finger should fit between the strap and your shoulder. Overtightening causes shoulder pain; loosen if you feel pressure.
  5. Adjust the load lifters: Tighten the load lifter straps (the small straps near your collarbone) until they form a 45-degree angle from the pack to your shoulders. This pulls the pack closer to your back and stabilizes the load. If the load lifters are too loose, the pack will sway; too tight and the pack may ride up.
  6. Fine-tune the sternum strap: Clip the sternum strap and slide it to a comfortable height across your chest. It should not restrict breathing or rub your neck. The strap helps keep the shoulder straps in place but should not bear weight. A too-tight sternum strap can cause chafing and restrict arm movement.
