Quick Answer
To give your cat a pill easily, use a mouldable treat like ROYAL CANIN Pill Assist to completely encase the medication, then offer it as you would any treat. Follow a simple process to avoid common pitfalls.
Why Pill Assist Treats Work
Many cats are adept at detecting pills hidden in food or will refuse them outright. Pill Assist treats are specifically designed with a soft, mouldable texture that allows you to completely envelop the pill, masking its smell and taste. This reduces the chance your cat will reject the medication.
Choosing the Right Treat
Not all treats work equally well for hiding pills. Pill Assist treats are formulated to be pliable and sticky enough to hold the pill securely, and they come in a flavor that most cats find appealing. While you could use other soft treats, Pill Assist is specifically made for this purpose.
Step-by-Step Guide to Giving Your Cat a Pill
- Step 1: Prepare the Treat and Pill: Take a small amount of the Pill Assist treat (about the size of a pea or marble) and warm it slightly in your hands to make it more pliable. Place the pill in the center of the treat. Common mistake: using too little treat. Ensure the pill is completely covered with no edges exposed.
- Step 2: Form the Treat Around the Pill: Mould the treat around the pill, rolling it into a small ball or shape that your cat will accept. Make sure the treat is sealed completely so no part of the pill is visible. Checkpoint: If the treat feels too dry or crumbly, add a tiny drop of water to help it stick together.
- Step 3: Offer the Treat to Your Cat: Present the treat to your cat as you would any other treat. You can offer it from your hand or place it in their food bowl. Watch to ensure they chew and swallow it completely. Common mistake: giving the treat and walking away. Stay to confirm they ate the entire treat and didn't spit out the pill.
