Quick Answer
Introduce new wet food gradually over 7–10 days, mixing increasing amounts with the current food, and monitor your cat's reaction to decide whether to continue or stop.
Why Gradual Transition Works
Cats are creatures of habit and can be sensitive to sudden changes in diet. A gradual transition helps your cat adjust to the new taste and texture while minimizing digestive upset.
Some cats are more particular about texture than flavor. Wet foods with a pâté or flaked texture may be more acceptable to picky eaters than chunks in gravy.
Diagnosis: Is It Pickiness or a Food Problem?
- Symptom: Your cat sniffs the new food and walks away, or eats only a few bites and then leaves the bowl.
- Likely Cause: Sudden change in flavor, texture, or smell can make a cat cautious. Some cats also prefer a specific texture (pâté vs. chunks) or a stronger fish aroma.
- Corrective Action: Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% current food. Gradually increase the new food ratio over 7–10 days. Warm the food slightly to enhance aroma, and offer it at room temperature. If your cat eats the mix, continue increasing the ratio. If not, move to the next step.
- Stop or Choose Another Option: If your cat refuses to eat for more than 24 hours, shows signs of digestive upset (vomiting, diarrhea), or consistently rejects the new food after 10 days, stop the transition. Consider trying a different flavor or texture, or consult your veterinarian. Never let a cat go without food for more than 24 hours; this can lead to serious health issues.
