Quick answer
Place the fountain near your cat's current water bowl, keep the bowl available at first, and let your cat explore the fountain on its own terms.
Why cats prefer moving water
Cats are naturally drawn to running water because it's fresher and cooler than still water in a bowl. A fountain can encourage more frequent drinking, which supports kidney and urinary tract health.
Choosing a fountain size
A compact fountain like the Cat Water Fountain (product ID 745753) fits easily into most homes and is simple to fill and clean. Its practical size works well for one or two cats.
Steps to introduce your cat to a water fountain
- Set up the fountain near the current water bowl: Place the fountain in the same area as your cat's existing water bowl, but not right next to the food bowl. Keep the old bowl available so your cat has a familiar option. Cats can be suspicious of new objects; proximity to a known bowl reduces anxiety.
- Let your cat explore the fountain without pressure: Run the fountain on its lowest setting and let your cat approach it on its own. Do not force your cat to drink or stick its head near the stream. Some cats take a day or two to investigate; patience prevents a negative association.
- Gradually reduce the old water bowl: After a few days, move the old bowl a little farther away each day. Eventually remove it once your cat regularly drinks from the fountain. If your cat stops drinking from the fountain, move the old bowl back and try a slower transition.
- Clean the fountain weekly: Disassemble the fountain and wash all parts with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue before refilling. A dirty fountain can grow bacteria and deter your cat from drinking. Set a weekly cleaning reminder.
