Quick answer
Soak the Swamp Cooler Harness, wring it out, and fit it snugly on your dog. Evaporative cooling pulls heat away from the body as your dog moves.
Why evaporative cooling works for active dogs
Unlike ice packs or gels, evaporative cooling doesn't weigh your dog down or lose effectiveness once the pack warms up. The Swamp Cooler Harness uses your dog's own movement and body heat to trigger cooling, so it works hardest when your dog is working hardest.
When to use it—and when to skip it
The Swamp Cooler Harness shines on dry, hot days above 75°F (24°C) with low humidity. In humid conditions, evaporation slows and the cooling effect is less noticeable. For dogs that overheat easily or have thick coats, this harness gives an extra edge without restricting movement.
How to use the Swamp Cooler Harness for maximum cooling
- Soak the harness thoroughly: Submerge the entire harness in cool water for 30-60 seconds. The Swamp Cooler material needs full saturation to activate. A common mistake is only dampening it—the cooling effect is much weaker. Soak, don't spritz. Full saturation is key.
- Wring out excess water: Gently squeeze the harness to remove dripping water. It should be wet but not soaking. Too much water adds weight and can drip into your dog's eyes. A good test: squeeze until no more than a few drops fall.
- Fit the harness snugly: Place the harness on your dog and adjust all six straps for a secure, comfortable fit. The harness should be snug enough that you can't rotate it, but loose enough to slide two fingers under any strap. Check that the chest attachment point sits flat. A loose harness reduces cooling contact and can chafe.
- Re-wet during long outings: On hikes longer than an hour, the harness will start to dry out. Re-soak it at a stream, fountain, or with a water bottle. The cooling effect returns immediately. A common oversight is waiting until the harness is bone-dry—re-wet as soon as you notice it's only slightly damp. Carry extra water for re-wetting if no natural water source is available.
- Rinse and air dry after use: After each use, rinse the harness with fresh water to remove dirt and salt. Hang it to air dry away from direct heat. Do not machine wash or put it in the dryer—heat can damage the evaporative material.
Product facts
-
Swamp Cooler™ Harness: The Swamp Cooler™ Harness integrates Swamp Cooler™ technology directly into a three-strap harness platform, using evaporative cooling to pull body surface heat away. This means you don't need a separate cooling vest—the harness itself does double duty as both a secure fit and a cooling layer.
