Quick answer

Set up the Core Box components, choose your Legend, then follow the turn phases: Planning, Action, and End. Avoid the common mistake of skipping the Planning phase.

What’s in the Core Box

The Core Box includes six Legends: Bangalore, Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Pathfinder, and Wraith. Each has dedicated components, plus game modes, maps, and special features that you can mix and match for endless replayability. For your first game, stick with the basic mode to learn the flow before adding variants.

First game setup and play steps

  1. Unbox and organize: Open the Core Box and separate the miniatures, cards, dice, tokens, and map tiles by type. Punch out any cardboard tokens carefully. Use small bowls or a tray to keep tokens from rolling away during play.
  2. Choose your Legend: Each player picks one of the six Legends (Bangalore, Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Pathfinder, or Wraith). Take the corresponding character board, ability cards, and miniature. First-time players should pick a Legend with straightforward abilities—Bloodhound or Wraith are good starting choices.
  3. Set up the map: Assemble the map tiles according to the basic game mode instructions. Place the loot tokens, ring tokens, and any starting position markers as shown in the rulebook. Common mistake: forgetting to place the ring tokens correctly—double-check the map layout diagram.
  4. Learn the turn phases: Each round has three phases: Planning (choose actions secretly), Action (resolve actions in order), and End (check ring closure, score, etc.). Do not skip Planning—it sets up the whole turn. During your first game, read each phase aloud as a group to keep everyone on track.
  5. Play your first round: Start with the basic game mode (no special variants). Follow the turn phases, using your Legend’s ability cards when appropriate. Focus on movement and looting to get a feel for the flow. Expect the first round to take longer than later rounds—that’s normal. Pause to clarify rules as needed.
